The Praxity Alliance: Supporting Leadership in North America

The North American International Tax Conference 2023, Austin, TX

The North American region is home to some of the largest firms in the Praxity Alliance. Together they give value and excellent client service across this hugely important region. Praxity’s programme of North American conferences is the chance for member firms to explore local, national and international issues on the North American continent. Having multiple representatives in the region means close cooperation and easy collaboration between firms, giving firm leaders the opportunity to network face-to-face, forge new relationships and strengthen existing ones.

This year, the Praxity North American International Tax Conference was proudly hosted in the Texan capital of Austin. The Hilton Hotel saw a huge range of Praxity leaders professionals attend to explore a rapidly changing tax environment for their clients, with many aspects in flux. Austin’s unique character, where tech innovations meet southern hospitality, was a most appropriate setting.

Helping to shape the future of the industry, the conference agenda featured guest speaker Marlena Lee, Dimensional’s Head of Investment Solutions and a member of the Investment Research Committee. Her opening remarks demonstrated the full range of her experience in analysis, education and thought leadership on investment topics, helping delegates to navigate a complex landscape. It was the perfect start to a deep and inventive programme that explored the full range of the tax landscape.

The two-day event examined a range of contemporary topics in tax, within which there is significant flux at national, state and province level. New ESG regulations and Pillar 2 laws are extremely hot topics currently and were represented in many sessions. Alliance member firms are leading the way in these areas, helping their clients to remain compliant and successful through the changing legislation. M&A remains relevant as many firms prioritise succession and the future of their businesses. Cryptocurrency, Artificial Intelligence and other emerging technologies come further into the mainstream, with an increased drive towards regulation and standardisation ahead of the enormous rate of change. Predicting the future isn’t always possible, but this conference took great strides towards it.

To ensure that every delegate got the value they were looking for from the conference, the programme was split into three tracks, to ensure that different levels of experience and specialisation were covered. Group discussions and plenary events kept the event cohesive and welcoming, while all delegates were given plenty of chance to enjoy the occasion, meeting face to face with some of the true friends they had made in the Alliance. With 80 newer and less senior professionals attending, the accompanying Praxity Boot Camps remained the perfect chance to share technical in-house training, with knowledge from across the Alliance allowing for inter-firm upskilling. A key advantage of the Praxity conferences is the genuine connection between professionals, allowing for less guarded moments and closer collaboration. Even in an industry where remote working is commonplace, the ability to meet in person and take advantage of the Alliance has huge power.

The North American International Tax Conference mixes specialisation with a wider view, so each technical area gets the coverage it demands, and that it is understood within the whole context of the industry. This vision and agility are where Praxity leaders shine, guiding their member firms towards a compelling future.

Justin Stenberg, Partner at FORVIS and Praxity North American International Tax Chair, comments on the building success of the conference:

“Many thanks go out to the Alliance member firms for actively participating in the largest North American International Tax Conference in Praxity history. With 441 total participants, we enjoyed several days of superior technical training and had the opportunity to catch up with friends, clients, and colleagues. I look forward to next year’s conference which shall be held in Orlando, FL on 13-15* November 2024. We are excited to add assurance and private client tracks to next year’s event.”

Next year’s conference in Orlando will explore how these changes have resonated with member firms and the tax space, ensuring that the Praxity Alliance has a handle on every thread of operation.
